Sending MMS messages from an iPhone 4

November 17th, 2010

Following a recent call from a Geko Direct customer I have come up against quite a bizarre complaint.  The iPhone 4 on Orange UK is not MMS enabled by default at the network and this service will need to be switched on. In order for you to do this you will need to call Orange Customer Services on your short dial number (345) and they can switch it on instantly.  Having never had to enable MMS at the network on any other phone this stumped me for a while.  I checked with Apple Support who gave me a list of instructions to follow but since the OS update these options have been removed. So if you are on Orange and want an iPhone make sure that you ask at the point of sale for MMS to be switched on, if you are a Geko Direct customer then just give them a call on  01952 602280

Carrier settings updates are small files (about 10k) that are downloaded from iTunes to be installed on your iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + 3G. The carrier settings can include updates to the default APN (how the device accesses the carrier’s cellular data network). The carrier settings for iPhone also include special dialling codes at Settings > Phone > [Carrier] Services, default settings for Stocks, Maps, Weather, and other items. When you insert a new SIM or micro-SIM into an iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, you must connect the device to a computer running iTunes to download the latest carrier settings. You should also install the latest carrier settings updates for your device as soon as they are available.

To check if a carrier settings update is available for your iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + 3G:

  1. Make sure there is an appropriate SIM or micro-SIM installed in your iPhone or iPad, that you have a working Internet connection on your computer, and that iTunes 9.1 or later installed on your computer.
  2. Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
  3. If a carrier setting update is available iTunes displays a prompt:

"An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to install it now?"

  1. Click “Update Settings” to load the confirmation dialog.

    1. Hold the power button until “slide to power off” appears.
    2. Slide to power off your device.
    3. When it is off, press the power button to turn it back on.
